Equipping a Junior Golfer: Understanding the Components of a Junior Golf Set

So, you want to introduce your child to the world of junior golf? The great news is their new hobby will offer them a multitude of benefits beyond just physical activity! Engaging in this sport at a young age can instil valuable life skills such as patience, discipline, and perseverance. As children navigate the challenges of the course, they learn to overcome obstacles, manage frustration, and adapt to varying conditions, all of which are transferable to other aspects of their lives. Furthermore, junior golf fosters social development by providing opportunities for interaction with peers, coaches, and other members of the golfing community!

However, introducing your child to the game of golf involves more than just teaching them how to swing a club—it’s about providing them with the correct equipment to succeed and enjoy the sport. So, with that in mind, what actually makes up a junior golf set? If you’re a novice to the world of golf, or simply want to learn more, you’re in the right place! We will delve into the essential components of a junior golf set, discuss their significance in nurturing young golfers, and offer insights into how to select the perfect set for your budding player. Let’s begin!

A junior golf set typically consists of several key components, each serving a specific purpose in a young golfer’s journey

Driver

The driver, also known as the 1-wood, is designed for long-distance shots off the tee. Junior drivers feature larger clubheads with more forgiveness to help young golfers achieve maximum distance and accuracy.

Fairway Woods

Woods, are used as a transition between your driver and irons. They are used to hit the ball longer distances. Great clubs off shorter grass, but not ideal if the ball is in the rough.

Hybrid

Hybrids, also known as rescue clubs, are versatile clubs designed to replace traditional long irons. Junior hybrids feature a combination of wood and iron characteristics, making them easier to hit for young golfers who are still developing their skills.

Irons

Irons make up the bulk of a junior golfer’s club set and are used for a variety of shots, including approach shots, fairway shots, and chipping around the green. Junior iron sets usually include a combination of mid-irons (4-6), short irons (7-9)

Wedges

Wedges are your specialist clubs for getting the ball on the green and close to the flag from all of the tricky positions near the green. Wedges are designed to get the ball in the air as quickly as possible whilst not travelling a long distance, this is due to the increased loft on each club. We recommend at least 1 wedge in every set to allow children to learn proper technique on their “short game”.

Putter

The putter is arguably the most critical club in a junior golfer’s bag, as it is used for most shots on the putting green. Junior putters are designed with smaller, lighter heads and shorter shafts to accommodate a young golfer’s height and promote proper putting mechanics.

Golf Bag

The golf bag serves as the young golfer’s mobile storage unit, carrying all their clubs, balls, tees, and other accessories. Junior golf bags are designed with lightweight materials and ergonomic straps for easy carrying, ensuring young players can comfortably transport their equipment around the course.

Accessories

A junior golfer will need more than just the clubs, they will need a multitude of accessories. For this I recommend you read the following blog post to get to know the ins and outs of what to keep in a golf bag.

When choosing a junior golf set for your young player, don’t forget to consider the following factors:

Age and Height

Select a set that aligns with your child’s height to ensure the clubs are the right length and weight for their size. If you are unsure on what size you need, use our club selector tool.

Skill Level

Consider your child’s skill level and playing ability when choosing a junior golf set. A beginner junior golfer won’t need a full set of clubs, to begin with get them the essentials to start playing and enjoying golf. Our starter sets are perfect for this. Whereas a more experienced junior golfer will benefit from having more clubs as they will have large distance gapping between clubs, and they may be able to play a multitude of different shots. For this we recommend either our intermediate or Pro Sets.

Budget

Determine your budget for a junior golf set and explore options within that price range. Remember that investing in quality equipment will enhance your child’s enjoyment and performance on the course. This is due to cheaper sets being made with heavier less suitable materials. We’d always recommend against purchasing equipment outright as children are always growing and you don’t know how long that set will be suitable for them. This is why we have designed our subscription offering to give parents the flexibility required with growing children. With Kondor Kidz, we’ll choose the perfect set for your junior and save you money while we do it! Find out more HERE.

In conclusion, a junior golf set is more than just a collection of clubs—it’s a gateway to the world of golf for young players. By understanding the components of a junior golf set and selecting the right set for your budding golfer based on factors like age, height, skill level, and budget, you can provide them with the tools they need to succeed and enjoy the sport for years to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is included in a junior golf set?

This will vary from set to set so is difficult to give a blanket answer. Most generic junior golf package sets will contain a Fairway wood, an iron, a wedge, a putter and a bag which is the bare essentials to get a junior golfer started. At Kondor Kidz, we offer 3 different set builds to suit budget and playing ability. For novices we recommend either starter set. More advanced golfers would suit either our intermediate or Pro sets depending upon their needs and your budget.

Choosing the right junior golf set?

The most important aspect to choosing the right junior golf set is to ensure the clubs are the correct size. If you are struggling with what size to get use our club selector tool to see what sets we recommend based upon your child’s height.

Junior golf club set for beginners?

For a beginner junior golfer, I would recommend looking at our starter sets. This will provide the golfer with the basics to learn good technique and get them started on their golfing journey. Thanks to our junior golf club subscription you can then upgrade/exchange your set easily as and when your junior golfer either needs more clubs or has a growth spurt.

Essential clubs for junior golfers?

To get started the minimum we would recommend for a beginner junior golfer is a fairway wood, a mid-iron, a wedge, and a putter. Our starter sets contain exactly this and start from as little as £6.99pm. This will allow a junior golfer to get around a golf course and learn all of the basic techniques needed to get started on their junior golf journey.

Selecting a junior golf bag?

When selecting a golf bag for a junior golfer there are a number of key things to focus on. Firstly, be sure to choose something stylish that your child likes, remember “look good, play good” the role confidence plays in golf is huge and cannot be overlooked.

Secondly, is the storage capacity, for beginner golfers I would suggest the standard junior golf bags are plentiful, however if your junior golfer gets more serious and is regularly playing 18 hole rounds, then look into getting them a cart bag to go on their golf trolley. A cart bag will provide much more storage space allowing your junior golfer to stock up on snacks and warm clothing ensuring they are comfortable during their round of golf.

Lastly, is look at the regular climate you play in. If a UK junior golfer, I would recommend buying a waterproof golf bag. These bags will ensure all of your extra clothes and accessories stay dry during your round to make for a much more comfortable golfing experience.
